Cultural Arts
Cultural Arts
Saint Clement School offers our students experiences in cultural arts as a part of the daily curriculum, as well as through extra-curricular activities. Our students have the opportunity to participate in music, performance arts, visual arts, and our newest instrumental band program. Additionally, because we are located in such close proximity to amazing cultural arts opportunites, our faculty and students are continually taking advantage of the many offerings of the fine city of Chicago. We are located within walking distance of many opportunities, including the Lincoln Park Zoo and the Peggy Notebaert Nature Conservatory. We see the city of Chicago as our cultural arts classroom!
In addition, within our school day, students have opportunities to express their interests and creativity via the following forums:
Instrumental Music
The instrumental band program is open to students in grades 4 - 8 who are interested in learning to play the flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, French horn, trumpet, trombone, baritone horn, or snare drum. The band practices before school every Tuesday, with lessons conducted during the school day. Each class is designed for students to learn the fundamentals of playing an instrument and to develop the skills necessary to play in a concert band, a small ensemble, and as a soloist. Students will use warm-ups, scales, solos, a method book, and band music to develop their tone, technique, articulation, and musicianship on their instrument. Students will also learn how to read music, basic music theory, and will do ear training. Culminating formal performances in the fall and spring for our school, parent, and parish community allow the students to perform for their family and friends.
Choral Arts
The Anchords (grades 7-8) is a pop group that performs at Christmas and spring concerts. Clementines (grades 4-5) performs a Christmas and spring mini musical for the student body. These groups give students who love music extra chances to perform! Students also have the chance to perform liturgical celebrations throughout the year and during our Sunday liturgies.
Concerts
All Saint Clement students perform in an annual Christmas concert and a formal Spring concert. The performances are held in conjunction with our Visual Arts Gallery and Show. All students in Pre-K through 8 receive music instruction at Saint Clement during the school day. Depending on the student's age level, they will learn the basics of singing, including correct breathing techniques, posture, sight reading music, and performance practices. Once in middle school, students continue to perfect proper singing, breathing, sight reading music, and performance techniques. These skills will be honed while performing a varied repertoire of music from many different eras, cultures, and styles. Students will also learn basic music theory and composition using our Garage Band software. Our formal concerts throughout the year allow us to come together as a community and honor all of their hard work, dedication, and learning.
